Room 13 encompasses an expanding network of linked studios
worldwide who share their work and their thinking. Surrounding these studios is
an international community of artists, educators, thinkers and other professionals
who share their skills to mutual advantage. The result is an ongoing collaboration
between adults and young people and a thriving culture of philosophical enquiry
driven by a motivation to think and to learn.
The original Room 13 in Caol Primary School, Fort William
- set up by a group of students in 1994 - is a visual arts studio, and the majority
of our studios worldwide have adopted this model. To the left you will see a full
list of countries that are now home to Room 13. |
Each Room 13 studio facilitates the work of young artists
alongside a professional adult artist-in-residence, providing an exchange of ideas,
skills and experience across the ages. As the Room 13 concept has developed and
spread throughout the world it has become clear that our approach can be adapted
to a wide variety of educational environments and art forms.
Every Room 13 studio is unique - they are run differently
by their individual management teams, work with different artists or art forms,
keep different business hours and all have slightly different ways of working. It
really depends on what works best for the students, educators, artists and the community
they are working in. One thing we have found though is that every Room 13 'feels'
the same and, it is easy for our artists to feel at home in one and others studios.
Room 13 Network represents a growing international culture
of creativity and social enterprise, which becomes absorbed into the schools and
communities wherever a Room 13
|
studio is established. It is accessible to individuals
of all ages who choose to associate with Room 13, and generates ripples of influence
into the wider community. By building on established links and continuing to further
develop the Room 13 Network, we create a forum through which artists and young people
can engage with different sectors of society, gain experience that enhances their
curriculum learning and benefit from the international relationships and cultural
exchange that they themselves have developed.
Room 13 International is a registered charity No. SCO40509,
formed to support and develop our worldwide network of studios and promote the core
educational values they represent.
